What is projected augmented reality?

A short definition of projected augmented reality, an example from manual assembly, and how Arkite handles it.

What is projected augmented reality?

Projected augmented reality (projected AR) uses a projector to show digital information directly on the physical work surface: arrows, outlines, highlights and text appear on the part, the bin or the fixture where the operator works.

  • Information shown directly on the work surface
  • No device worn by the operator
  • Used for picking, assembly, wiring and packaging
Explained

Projected augmented reality in manual assembly

Augmented reality adds digital information to the real world. It can be delivered through glasses or headsets, through a tablet or screen, or through projection. With projected AR, nothing is worn or held: the operator keeps both hands free and looks at the work, not at a device.

Projected AR is well suited to manual workstations, where the work surface is fixed and the operator repeats steps on different variants. Combined with a 3D sensor, the projection can also confirm that a step was done correctly.

Example: during cable assembly, the route of each wire is projected 1:1 on the workbench, and the next connection lights up once the previous one is confirmed.

With Arkite

How Arkite handles it

  • Instructions, arrows and outlines projected on the work surface
  • Projections generated automatically when a detection is taught
  • The same step shown on the operator screen
  • Each projected step can be checked with a 3D sensor

Questions about projected augmented reality

What is the difference between projected AR and AR glasses?

With AR glasses, each operator wears a device. With projected AR, the information appears on the work surface itself, so nothing is worn and every operator at the station sees the same guidance.

Is projected AR only for assembly?

No. It is also used for picking and kitting, cabling and wiring, packaging and inspection.

Does projected AR need a dark environment?

Arkite workstations are used in normal factory lighting. Exact setup depends on the workstation and is defined with Arkite or a certified partner.
